This year, World Refugee Day, marked globally on 20 June, is focused on solutions for refugees and the “power of inclusion”. This briefing note aims to pay respect to the resilience and courage of refugees in making new homes in foreign places, highlighting their initiatives and strengths, and shedding light on the community support initiatives created by refugees themselves, in part supported by UNHCR and other international partners.
Refugees are people who are forced to flee their homes because of persecution or war to find a place of safety in another country. But ‘refugee’ is just a label (and one that no one wants to have)!
Refugees are business people, teachers, doctors, IT specialists, carpenters, musicians… and also, children, young people, women, men, older persons – with hopes, capacities and potential. When included and given the opportunity to realise their potential in education, work, economic and social life, refugees also self-organise and support each other with initiatives that support or create opportunities also for others.
